Rhinoplasty is considered one the most demanding and sophisticated procedures in cosmetic surgery. The nose occupies the centre of the face and its size and shape play a crucial role in facial aesthetics and expression.
The size, proportions, balanced bridge line, optimal width and delicately shaped nostrils define a well-shaped nose.
The nose is also an essential part and entrance to your respiratory system.
Some people have a naturally large, misshapen or crooked nose, while some deformities are the result of an injury.
An external nose deformation is often a sign of a deformation of the internal structure, which causes breathing problems, especially during physical activity.
Cosmetic rhinoplasty involves reshaping the nasal cartilage and bone, correcting the bridge line, shape and length of the nose, and refining the nasal tip for a more harmonious facial profile.
Rhinoplasty can also be performed on the nostril rims (the nasal ala) to reshape the patient’s nostrils.
Functional rhinoplasty is aimed at correcting a deviated septum and reducing the size of enlarged turbinates, which causes nasal obstruction, or even sleep apnoea.
The level of surgical correction depends on the recommendation of the specialist and the specific requirements and desired outcomes of the patient, as determined during individual consultations with doc. dr. sc. Aleksandar Milenović.
About the procedure
There are two main types of rhinoplasty: closed rhinoplasty and open rhinoplasty.
Closed rhinoplasty involves incisions made inside the nose, which results in no visible scarring.
External rhinoplasty (decortication approach) involves an external incision along the columella, which heals quickly with minimal scarring.
Both methods have become the global standard in cosmetic surgery. They can also be combined with other procedures to achieve the desired result.
It is important to note that the final appearance of the nose is partly dictated by its original shape and dimensions. A too radical reduction of the nasal structure may weaken the structural support of the nose.
Major factors affecting the outcome in rhinoplasty are the quality and thickness of the skin and supportive subcutaneous tissues, which also limit the extent to which a nose can be reshaped.
Although there are no changes made to the skin tissue itself, removing too much cartilage and bone can lead to inadequate skin adaptation to the new shape.
Candidates
It is important to have realistic expectations. Considering the above, the aim of this cosmetic procedure is not to get “a new face”, but to create a more refined version of the natural nose, and overall a more aesthetically pleasing facial profile.
The consultations include analysing the physical, or anatomical, conditions and possibilities of the procedure, as well as the motivation and desired outcome of the client.
Good candidates include anyone:
Since every case is specific, it is necessary to learn about and use the different methods available, which helps achieve optimal results and correct functionality of the nose, as well as a balanced overall facial appearance, while ensuring satisfying results for the patient.
Considering the above, the aim of this cosmetic procedure is not to get “a new face”, but to achieve a more proportional and harmonious look.
